The Maria Project
...beautiful shoes for beautiful kids
Almost every January, my mom and I go to the Philippines to see our family and celebrate our hometown festival. In 2020, we had the opportunity to bring four huge duffels of childrens’ shoes and distribute them from the porch of my Grandma Maria’s house in Tapulao. It was a pretty awesome day. Prior to, we posted a sign stating we’d be giving away shoes on a first come, first served basis. We handed out numbers as the kids arrived. The first little boy, assigned the #1, showed up at 5am and waited patiently for four hours until the 9am start time. Sadly, we ran out of shoes long before we ran out of kids. However, 239 beautiful children did walk away in brand new shoes. One little guy later told me that he couldn’t sleep that next night because he was just so excited about his new shoes.
In January 2023, we went back in the Philippines, and our goal was to give away 500 pairs of shoes. Thanks to the generosity of so many folks, we surpassed that goal. In fact, 613 kids walked away in brand new Crocs. In addition to a pair of shoes, each child received a toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, and bar of soap.
In January 2025, our goal is to put 1,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of 1,000 beautiful kids. In order to do this, we need individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations to donate children's Crocs that are new with tags.
Perhaps you ask….
Why Crocs specifically?
Why new with tags?
For many of these children, this could be the only pair of brand new shoes they receive in their entire childhood, so we want them to have something extra nice and name brand. Also, since these shoes will most likely be passed down to younger siblings when the original wearer grows out of them, we want them to be of lasting quality, and we all know that Crocs hold up. Furthermore, especially during the rainy season, these kids are walking in the rain every single day, often crossing flooded streets, so shoes that won’t get soggy are a must. Finally, we are limited in the number/weight of checked bags we are allotted. Crocs are lightweight—which means we can pack more pairs!

3. If you’d prefer to pick out shoes yourself, you can mail them to Maryanne Tuck Grimmett, PO Box 148, Union, WV 24983.
100% of the donations received will be used to purchase and transport brand new Crocs to the children of Tapulao, Philippines. On distribution day, we will go live on Facebook so that you see the kids’ smiling faces for yourself.
Thanks in advance for showing love to beautiful little boys and girls on the other side of the world.
The Maria Project is named in memory of my grandmother Maria Cruz. She was hospitable, generous, and kind. Even when she didn’t have much to spare, she would always share with those in need. In January, she will smile from heaven at the sight of hundreds of precious children walking away from her home in a pair of brand new shoes.
